Art2uplift was asked to co-create a mural at the Ernst van Heerden Library in Pearston, Karoo in October 2019 as part of a community development initiative with Sophakama Community Partnership, Wickersley School and Sports College, Face Africa, Xpression Sessions and the local community.
It was important that the community that use the library was at the centre of the theme and design thinking processes. After workshops with local forums and clubs, an environmental theme emerged, wanting to promote care for the earth, as well as encourage a love for reading.
Art2uplift sent a few designs and together we decided on the favourite design. What we love about the process Art2uplift uses, is that a bigger picture design provides a beautiful professional looking mural from afar – which we wanted as we were painting a library – yet upon closer inspection, messages from children and other community members present during painting can be read. The fact that these inspiring and educational words of wisdom was written by the community, for the community, makes it extra special.
Great feedback has been received, with everyone admiring the colour brought to a sometimes dusty town. Great care has also been taken to look after the mural, especially the neighbours who out of their own will make sure the plants we planted at the library as part of the initiative is well cared for!
It was a pleasure to work with Luc and Kim, trusting their process while we could focus on other parts of the activities during the visit. Thank you for a smooth, well planned beautiful process.”
